Gratitude Friday: The Calm Before the Storm

Snow Storm 2/5/10

I hate to get all weather lady up in here. But there is a major winter storm event that will strike parts of the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic per the weather channel over the next few days. I remember last year I was like “I just want it to snow one time”. Well now I change my mind, partly because its snowed many times since my initial request. And everytime it snows, I gain a pound.

I think that is so sad, especially about all this snow on a weekend.

But the silver lining is, I’m getting tons of personal projects done. And I’m grateful that I can always find the silver lining.

I was NOT looking forward to this upcoming snow storm. I had MOFO plans. But then I just changed my mindframe, and now I’m looking forward to it…well as much as I can. I’m just going to have a party in my house. I got up this morning and started the party early. Well at least the dancing part of it. Ha!

I wish we were getting some snow up here, but it appears the Noreaster isn’t going to slam the Northeast. Go figure.

I am grateful for beer, football food, and the Super Bowl. Go black coach!

I dont’ know where it was, but I’m listening to Russ Parr and the lady was talking about 24″ somewhere… LAWD bless it.

I’m grateful that I keep appointments, even when I am exahusted.

So, this morning I’ve been researching my criminal justice field and have found that nothing exists in my city (right now) that can even pay me what I make as a legal assistant now (no degree- crazy, right?)

So, I think in my career, I want to be a compliance officer which is with the Department of Justice (I think)… and I emailed them for information. Thing is, I looked at their jobs and everything is in Virginia/ Washington!!!!! Wonder if a move will be in order for me?

    When do you graduate?

    “Whoop whoop! Lol

    When do you graduate?”

I was looking on the website and the jobs are in Washington, D.C.

Honey, I still have two years (12 claases)…. but if I lose my job (pending review- cutting costs), then I will just collect unemployment and go to school full time and knock it out way faster. I wonder if I’d have to do internship though so I need to send an email to my advisor.

@80s: It sure is. He said we shall see at the end of this month how business goes, but I don’t wait- so I’ve already been looking. lol.

He said working here cutting hours could be an option… but no, not for me. I needs my money.

So after talking to both Mik and my Mama, I may just do the unemployment thing for a while so I can finish school.

@Sunny…Hey lady, on LinkedIn there is a Regulatory Compliance discussion group that you can network with….join LinkedIn now and start networking…call me over the weekend and I can tell u how to work it..heck that is where I’m getting interviews, advice and connections.

Hopefully you won’t get laid off but if you do get all the grants you can and get an internship while you go to school.

Glad that I’m not in the snow area right now.

Grateful that I got my health.

Grateful that I have the sense enough top be flexible whiel looking for a job

Grateful that I went ahead and got that M.S. even with the financial sacrifices and drama because no one can take that away from me…..

@V… Ummmm are you asking as in have I been running in the morning. And the answer to that is HELL NAW!!!!! I seriously think something is wrong with me because I cannot get up in the morning. But anyhow since my gym is by my job then I ain’t driving back up here on the weekends so I decided I would just go running instead. And my first day was going to be tommorrow. But due to the weather that may not happen.

Disclaimer: My morning on the weekends is what some may consider the afternoons. I get my sleeping on ;)

I’m grateful to live in Texas where we are crying because Sunday will be cloudy and in the mid-50’s.

I’m also grateful my sister was selected for an all-expense paid workshop on phd studies (i.e what to expect, the GRE, potential research subjects..etc..). She was one of only 10 candidates selected. I am so proud of her! It’s at UNC in Charlotte, NC which she might actually select as her alma mater for the actual program. Jada lives in Charlotte, right? I need to hit her up.

Also grateful to have friends who can indulge my quirks. I am dragging them to the Bollywood theater to see 3 Idiots tonight. The movie reportedly grossed more than Avatar! Can’t wait. :)

    How is everybody doing?

    Hi Sunny *waves*,

I do think if you can subsist on unemployment, you should go for it and focus on school. You get so much more out of school when it’s your only focus.

Hopefully unemployment would be a pretty good rate.. I’ve been working since 15 and have been on it for about a month. My mama actually makes more money on unemployment than she did on her job before she was laid off.. how crazy is that

Seriously I battle for d@mn near an hour trying to get out of the bed. It just be calling me calling me. My job forces me to be a morning person, but at my core I just am not one AT ALL.

@V…This is sooooo me……This morning I was laying in the bed just not wanting to get up and then my coworker called my cell phone… Mind you it was like 7:22 and she was on her way to work. So even though I’m still in the bed sleep. I had to pretend that I wasn’t still in the bed.. She was like have you left for work. I’m like no I’m bout to wake up go warm up my car… .She was calling me to tell me to avoid an area because of a wreck……

But seriously I’ve been getting in the bed earlier all week to see if that will help and it doesn’t. For one I end up just laying there watching the clock and then I still can’t get out the bed before 7:30. Mind you I need to be leaving the house at 7:30.

@Sunny. If you do have go on unemployment ( i hope you don’t) remember to take out the taxes because when I was on it and lot of my friends didn’t do it and got burned at tax time.

Concerning the grants you really will haveto research but I think you can get some stuff plus look at scholorships. Since you are getting your undergrad degree U think there is more stuff available. I’m still kicking myself for never applying for a grad school scholorship because school was so intense that I never made the time to do it. Google your major plus that you’re a minority so I know things will pop up. Also check out your school for stuff because I did get a small scholarship via school.

NOTHING works. I can go to bed earlier, doesn’t work. I can set my alarm clock earlier, doesn’t work. I actually have 2 alarms set…at different times. Doesn’t work!! I am the same as you. Technically I should be leaving my house at 7:30…and that’s usually around the time that I just rolling out of the bed.

The ONLY time that I leave my house semi on time is if I’m semi-hungover. Go figure. LOL Or if I have a meeting at 8 but I usually reschedule them for later in the day. Ha! .

This is how I feel right now. Although my grades would have been a lot better if I didn’t work two jobs and have a girlfriend at the time. The upside of me working and going to school is that I have A LOT more experience than the average recent college graduate. It is so much easier to just go to school. But I notice that a lot of these kids that just go to school can’t function on the job that well.

HE (noticed the caps) concluded that at worse case scenario, I’d go full time… Um, no.. at worst scenario, you are gonna have to let me go. I’m sure I can at least get more money doing unemploy, than working 20 hours here. Iz u serious?

@Humble..Yes u do have the advantage of students with no experience whic is a good thing. Ur in engineering right?(no. I’m not working undercover for V or L.P.) The obstacle I have is that with my past experience in other fields people assume that I will get bored in an entry level position and/or I’m too expensive for them. Heck I’m temping for $10/hr (commuting almost 100 miles daily) when several years ago I got $19-20/hr and I’m happy as heck to get it.

@Sunny. remind me to slap you the next time I see you :) . Never tell a boss that you will start looking for another job because now he will really pay attention to your work performance because it will be easier to fire you than pay you unemployment. Make yourself indispensible to him to where you would be last on the list to be let go. Let him know that you will try to stay as long as possible and honestly see if you can work part-time like 30-35 hours instead of 20 or flex schedule.

@B: I agree with this being an issue.. my resume spans from so much stuff and it’s hard to get into some fields without the proper experience in it… but what is so nuts is: How are you gonna get the experience if everyone requires experience?

  52. L.P.
    February 5, 2010 | 3:01 pm

As far as getting experience in a field you are interested in, there is always volunteering. Volunteering shows that you actually like the field that much and you garner experience in it as well. This could be good for you in case you realize you are not cut out for it.

    Hey, everyone!

I’m with @Hol…sorry I’ve been MIA, in & out all this week. I may be offered a new position soon. I’ve already had the first and second interviews and all of my references have been contacted. We’re still dickering over the salary & benefits. I’ve been unemployed & receiving unemployment since last July. This is the longest I have not worked. So…

    - I’m grateful that my husband’s salary, my unemployment check & our small but blessed savings account have made ends meet.

    - I’m grateful that the end of my unemployment may be in sight & I’m grateful for new opportunities. I’ll share more details later about this position & about my latest goal/decision concerning the bar exam.

    - I’m grateful I’m not in the DMV for this Snowmageddon as I’ve seen it referred to on Twitter, although we are having a small snow storm here.

    - I’m grateful for an eye doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Not because I love the eye doctor but because it is overdue and necessary.

    Have a great weekend, y’all.

    Go Shawnta!!! That is great.

@Humble.Yeah man with this economy employers feel that they can do anything because if you don’t like it then they can get soneone else really fast.

    Hey Holly!

I’m been dipping in teh breakroom waiting for Teh Rock to come on Oprah..ummm good. Funny how Hollywood can’t put him in movies where he actually has a romance and (I can see some nudity;))..I think they don’t want to know what the rock is cooking….sick of him in kiddie movies.
