I’m a huge believer in passion. The sad thing is when I talk about it with some people, including men, they think I mean hot steamy love. Passion can be hot steamy love, but the kind I’m writing on today has very little to do with romantic love or se!x. To me passion is what you’ve been put on this earth to do. It can be a variety of things: to be a great mother or wife, to write earth moving books and change people’s lives, to help poor people. I still don’t know EXACTLY what my passion is. So when I hear people speak about it or when I come across a blog that uncovers ways to find it, I’m engaged, self-diagnosed A.D.D be da!med.
Friday, I came across Steve Pavlina’s blog post on discovering your purpose in 20 minutes. I’ve been reading him for years. His work is a nice blend between self-development and thought consciousness (“your mind shapes your reality”.) I especially loved the 20 minutes part, because if I’m discovering anything about myself, I need to do it fast. lol.
He lists what do do in four simple steps:
1. Take out a blank sheet of paper or open up a word processor where you can type (I prefer the latter because it’s faster).
2. Write at the top, “What is my true purpose in life?”
3. Write an answer (any answer) that pops into your head. It doesn’t have to be a complete sentence. A short phrase is fine.
4. Repeat step 3 until you write the answer that makes you cry. This is your purpose.
I first wrote down some crazy stuff. “Smelling Coffee” was the first on my list. But it didn’t make me cry-besides is there any such thing as a professional coffee smeller?. I got close when it involved …well I won’t say now. But I did have some tears running down my face.
What sealed the deal was when Steve’s wife Erin Pavlina added me as a friend on Twitter Sunday-the day I really got to thinking about the passion task. I discovered Erin a years back when I started reading Steve’s blog.
I counted Erin’s twitter add as serendipity at its finest and an acknowledgment that what I was thinking about regarding my purpose and her husband’s passion task was in line with some early hits I got about my own life’s purpose Friday.

@ Sunny..thats what Steve Pavlina suggests. You can have core passions and a dominant one-he wrote that in another post or podcast. I personally believe you can many as well, but I would like to have maybe three or four. A.D.D cannot manage a rack of passions LOL..

I’m nitpicking here, but I don’t entirely agree with this. I think your purpose is what you are on earth to do, but your passion is that thing you absolutely need to do to feel whole and complete, earth and purpose be damned.
My passion is to change the world. I feel it, I believe it, I have even touched the margins of it. What I’m still trying to figure out is exactly how it will happen. And I don’t mean obtaining world peace, the cure for cancer, or anything like that. I just believe that an idea I have, whatever it turns out to be, will be the catalyst for the world to shift a bit on its social axis. I know it’s big and non-specific, but it’s mine. lol I wrote a little bit about this today in how your heroes tell you a lot about yourself. Each of mine changed the world, and I believe I’ll do the same.

The speaker (a local TV host and 2003 grad) explained how she had done so well professionally by realizing she needed to fundamentally be the same person she’d always been *nods to LP*
From this, I realize my passion is the same thing it was when I was 3.

How are ya? It is very true what you said about knowing your passion from the get go. When we look at our life in retrospect, it can give us a LOT of clues on who we have always been.
I listened to Nikki Giovanni on one of those Essence Tours once, and it truly was a defining moment in my life. She said something about people telling her that she would “outgrow” her strong positions as she got older and that she would “mellow” out… she said she hadn’t and she still strongly believes what she believed in her early years to hold true.
It almost brought me to tears because it was the years where I kept hearing that I needed to “calm down”, “slow down”, “be quieter about my passions” if I wanted to “settle down”… that a nice African Girl shouldn’t be so opinionated, and I was starting to believe it… Then, true serendipity at work, a friend’s mom Ms. Sandra (RIP) had the tickets but couldn’t go so she gave them to us… We just went for the free swag… and bam! there I was receiving a nugget of wisdom. I had to go talk to Nikki Giovanni and thank her… She’s one of my inspirations.

Right & as women we’re always hearing to be seen and not heard. But our voices need to be. WE have sooo many issues that people to hear and take action against.

When you’re a child it’s easy to discount for others to discount your beliefs/desires, when in fact it’s probably what you are

Oh my goodness, this could not have come at a greater time. I am always talking about passion with others to and they NEVER seem to get it!
I discovered my main passion at the tender age of six from what I like to call my first life altering epiphany.
My passion is world travel. It may as well be my man because I am burning with desire for it. I obsess over it, I constantly plan for it, I day dream, I wonder, it consumes me.
I am working now on creating a location independent career for myself so I can freely pursue this lifelong dream over an extended period of time.
My second passion is education. There is an old Sudanese Proverb that states, “Education is my mother and my father”. A lot children who were left without parents from Sudan’s Civil War held on to these words and migrated to the U.S. and the U.K. to earn college degrees, lots of them while working full time. How can that not be inspiring?
So, I would like to work on educating young black men especially from my home state once I am done with my world travels.
Funny enough, both of my “passions” were the result of documentaries I viewed obviously at a young age. Maybe I should throw creating documentaries somewhere up in the mix. Who said three’s a crowd?
I wish more people were passionate about something. I seriously think people would be happier. Men would not have the time to play multiple women (unless that was their passion), women would get a life instead of obsessing over men (unless that was their passion). People would understand the virtues of loyalty because more than anything they would be loyal to themselves and their own desires first.
I say we need a passion crusade!
Well my bedroom has been a MESS for months…… Everytime I would think about cleaning it up I would get overwhelmed so I would just shut the door and ignore it….
So I’ve been working in every room except that one…. And I promise every time I went in there for something it was like it was saying what about me… When is it going to be my turn???? LMAO
So I was literally in the doorway of my room like I promise I’m coming for you TODAY…. Let me just finish up some other stuff first…….

From always being on the go.. ..It was overwhelming..Luckily my summer clothes were in my guest room closet so I really didn’t even have to go in there too much. So I neglected it until last night…

My bedroom was cluttered for the past 4 months as well… Coincidentally at the same time, I fell off my exercise routine, was constantly tired and overall in bad shape…
Cleaning up the room cleared my mind.
If you are single, a cluttered bedroom will make it more difficult for a new relationship to get started; all that stuck energy literally makes it hard for you to meet someone new. And that’s before a potential partner gets a good look at the mess you are living in! Decluttering your bedroom is an excellent way to shake all that stuck energy loose and make room for a new relationship.

@80s: I AM DEAD… because my friends and J and me went to Hom-a-rama in the summer and there was an older black lady who took her shoes off and walked around the basement carpet talking about it’s soo soft. U reminded me of her.

Glad to see I’m not the only one. LOL. EVERY night I say, tomorrow I’m getting up when my alarm really goes off. But my dreams they just be calling me. The past couple of nights I’ve slept on the couch, with my alarm in the bed room. And you know what I do when the alarm in the room goes off? Get up, go in the bedroom, hit the snooze and proceed to go back to sleep for another 45 min – an hour. Ha!
