Sophia Loren giving Jayne Mansfield the side eye date unknown

Sophia Loren giving Jayne Mansfield the side eye date unknown

Treehouse, thank you all for stopping by today on very little notice. Everyone looks so lovely in their couture gowns and tuxedos. I would like to present to you the three people who have succeeded in getting a permanent side eye from yours truly, The Comeback Girl. Let it be known that The Comeback Girl HATES overused cliche urban slang, “side eye” being one, but she couldn’t think of a more befitting term for her frustration of a few people and associated things.

Let us begin shall we?

1. Irv Gotti: I spent much of the later part of 2007 writing about Deb Gotti, her husband Irv and the VH1 show that really put a human spin on the single man-married man double life most married or otherwise involved hip-hop artists (and some actors) “must” lead. It was the “player player” persona non grata that hip-hop bore out of the seemingly two faced love of status, ie, money and “ho!es”. Curiously, Irv Gotti would launch the careers of married hip-hop artists (Ja Rule,  DMX etc.) who would go on to have some of THE most messiest and public entanglements with other women while pimpin’ the “single guy” image.

How To Be  A Rapper 101: a) You cannot profess your love for your wife or longtime girlfriend in your music, nor can you talk about her in interviews (unless you’re retired, around 40, and your name is Rev Run) b) You must fall for the SAME hook line and sinker from the SAME types of thirsty women who don’t necessarily WANT you but LOVE the idea of being the seductress who tried to cause a commotion in your home, or b) Your groupie becomes your prey because “she’s so much different” from all the rest, including your wife. But we all know “b”  just might be hip hop pixie dust because the “ideal woman” is now the overt pursuer, the seductress and “Ms. Independent”. The hip hop trifecta trickling down to a block near you.

Oh, wait its already here. Carry on.

2. Personal Trainers Who Look In Your Refrigerator When You Don’t Turn In Your Food Diary On Time: I’ve been working out with a personal trainer for three days a week in my house, getting beach body ready for the summer. In the meantime, I have been mumu-ing it up, to do my beach body unveiling in a few weeks a couple of months. I think I’m making good progress. But my trainer requires a food diary, that she has to sign off on every two weeks or so. I totally get the whole behavior modification thing. And I kiss it up to God. I really DID try to keep one for a few days and then I forgot. I mean basically I eat salad and salmon, oatmeal for breakfast and chicken with a vegetable for dinner. So why do I have to feel like I’m in the first grade turning in my homework with this portion of the regimen? So my trainer cuts the workout short when I told her I’d get it to her next week or better yet, just check out my blog that I’m going to do JUST related to “what I ate”. And she was like: “no, it has to go in your folder”. And she precedes to walk upstairs and looks in my refrigerator and cabinets. She did find some unopened girl scout cookies. But you know what? That’s just how gangster I am about my “lifestyle change”, I can look at girl scout cookies and NOT eat them. Its a jedi thin mint trick.

3. Dreadlocks On 15 year Old “Little Waynes” And Their Consenting Parents: I know that the conscious crowd likes to call them “locks”. And I respect that and will thus address that particular crown and glory to those people. But I don’t like dreadlocks on the “little Wayne crowd”. I live in a neighborhood FULL of  precious middle-class “little Wayne’s” whose parents think they are too good to go to work, summer camp, or school during the summer break. “The Little Wayne” vibe is usually topped bottomed off with wife beaters, skinny jeans that fall off of narrow bony as!ses (thank God that the “Chubby Little Wayne’s” have realized that skinny straight leg jeans are not for hippy, big booty little boys. In my day, (back in the mid to late 90s) men who wore “locks” were vegetarians, they smoked “ganja”, they listened to Bob Marley, they may have even written a poem or two. They also had pretty white teeth. There was an aura to wearing locks. Now everybody and their momma outside of “the vibe” wears them. There is a check list for “lock”s; otherwise you have dreads: a) YOU MUST HAVE A TALENT (preferably a musical one, see Lalah Hathaway. b) YOU CANNOT BE CATTY or GHETTO “Urban Contemporary”c) YOU MUST KNOW THE HISTORY OF LOCKS d) YOU CAN NOT “LITTLE WAYNE” THE CHILDREN.

Your Turn Treehouse…If You Had To Give Three SideEye Awards who/what would get them?

What’s so funny is yesterday at church, the pastors message was “From a G to a Gent,” and he had a picture of Lil Wayne up on the screens and said, parents, do not allow your children to walk around looking like this. lol. Good message.

    Side Eyes from Me:
    1. B list singers/ actresses/ etc constantly complaining about the media invading their privacy and YET, pulling publicity stunts (ie: leaking naked pics) to gain relevancy.

    2. People that go hard on gay people or are scared to death of them: Why are you that worried about what they are doing- are u trying to tell us something?

This troubles me. No disrespect but people especially some black people but a lot of weight on looking a certain way instead of being a certain way. If I meet another clean-cut, suit and tie, always fresh haircut and shave, always fly, dude that is a snake it will be too soon.

I caught the part when Irv was talking to Russell. I’ve seen women do this my whole life. I give props to Irv because a woman like her wouldn’t give a dude like me another chance. But a cat like Irv? He can get away with what he does all the time.

@humble: So you think it’s good that he’s doing her like this? From her ambiance, she doesn’t seem like the most confident woman in the first place. – that could have something to do with why he is allowed to treat her like that.

“No disrespect but people especially some black people but a lot of weight on looking a certain way instead of being a certain way. ”

Me and my man were having this converstation yesterday. We were talking about his friend, who wants a new car bc her current one does not say career. I could totally understand where she is coming from- for I have been in the position. He argued that all a person needs to be worried about is their performance on the job.

But au contrare, mon fraer. Appearance means a LOT. I don’t think a man with a clean cut appearance is going to have the same opportunities in corporate America as a man rocking braids or dreds. In my previous workplace environment, this black man had to cut his dreds off in order to be a supervisor.

I’m not saying it’s right, but it simply is that way.

Men over 30 who still wanna be gangsta’s. Get a legit job already.

Women who dress in clothes OBVIOUSLY too small for them. Just b/c they make it does not mean it should be put on…stop with the muffin tops please.

No I think he is selfish and wrong for doing it. The conversation Russell had with Irv i had a similar converstaion with a friend. Women like her deal with these type of dudes all the time. I am willing to bet she is probably no-nonsense when it comes to anything else that is insignificant. But when it comes to how she is treated by him she takes everything.

Coporate America is different. In corporate america you move up by 80% BSing and 20% actually knowing something. People place too much emphasis on appearance. People are too easily impressed by well-spoken articulate fools and a ninja that always dressed up.

    My SideEye goes to

Women looking for an employee and not a teammate.

Dudes looking to make money by any means other than through education.

Women thinking they are smart and sophisticated when its just the people they hang around aren’t smart or sophisticated.

    Grown women with ponytails.

    Men in tight pants.

Men and Women that are too extra.

People faking southern accents when they are 3rd generation northerners.

    Happy Morning Everyone!

Here are a couple things I gave a “side-eye” to just this past weekend.

    1. Married men who aren’t consistent with wearing their ring.

    2. Women who are so self-conscious about their bodies that they won’t swim in front of others. I suppose I give a side eye because my body isn’t perfect and I will totally wear a swim suit…

    3. Women who are so self-conscious that they wear long sleeves in 90 degree weather! Redic!

@ Mikki Doodle…did you ask him why he’s doing it. If ANY of it resembles looking like everyone else..i’d have a problem.

re: Hummy’s opinion about looking VS. being a certain way.

Here is the thing about that…if you’re emulating a hip hop artist, if your pants are sagging…too me it causes you TO BE A CERTAIN WAY..ie not care about your appearance. Im sorry if I see a little boys underwear please trust he’s probably not going somewhere to get a summer job or reading a book at the library. Your outward appearance to me has a tendancy to dictate what you do, how you go about doing it etc. etc.

I think that when people pose for photos or record themselves doing things, they pretty much know it’s only a matter of time before the hit the internet. That is totally your perogative. People that are not interested in mainstream corporate employment or climbing that ladder are exempt from having to play the role.

But I cannot come up in my job or an interview with dredlocks or red weave and expect them not to look at me 10 carat crazy (and let’s not forget I am not even in a real corporate type employment).

@No: I hope you feel better. What did you think of Star Trek?

Thanks. I really liked Star Trek. However, I was never really into the original, I knew who the characters were but I was unfamiliar with backstories and whatnot. So I was able to just take the film like it was. Some people who are fans of the original didnt like the movie because it broke rules and plots that they set back then.

“It doesnt have to be your way. Many people choose to do their own, they would rather sacrifice opportunities then sacrifice themselves. At this point, if at all possible, I am done playing the role.”

Playing what role exactly??? “Im going to follow a few trends and fyck everyone else”..it would be different if someone had a really eclectic sense of style and they’ev ALWAYS had it. I really sympathize with those people who still try to exude a sense of being original in a workplace.

But come on…dudes who claim..playing a role..end up playing SOMETHING following a trend like a drone. To me thats whats also sad about this..even grown folks who push this foolishness off on kids OR cosign it by not SUGGESTING they be themeselves and not follow the flavor du jour.

    3. Black people who assume that if you didn’t come from a struggling background you must apologize for your success and being a member of the Lucky Sperm Club.

@Jada @ Nicki “wacktacular” and “10 carat crazy” (Asking permission to use for future reference) I usually say “craptacular”.

    @Comeback
I honestly didn’t want to watch Gotti’s Way last season but I was hooked because it puts the “real” in reality television.
I don’ty care for Irv’s opinions but now I understand how men like him tick. He thinks because he is rich that there shouldn’t be any problems at home. He and Deb don’t sleep with each other, he visits on the weekend and he pays the bills so in his way of thinking everything is great. Deb initally had hope that they would get back together but now she knows they are done. She did say that her mom lived the same way and she needs to break the cycle. At least she is going to school to get an education to better herself.
Did anyone notice that Irv’s father told Deb that even though he has been married for 52 years, 3 of those years he was separated from his wife but living in the same house? I wonder was Irv in the house during that separation.
Russell telling Irv to leave cracked me up because unlike Deb, Kimora had her own thing outside of the family so Russell can’t control her but Irv can control Deb because Deb made the number one mistake that my momma warned me about-NEVER MAKE ONE ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE YOUR WHOLE LIFE…FAMILY, WORK, HOBBIES, ETC>>>

The thing is you dont know what that persons mindset is. What could be a trend for others could be a passion for someone else. Example, I knew someone who wore a lot of jerseys way before the early 2000’s when every rapper alive started wearing them. As for the dreads thing, I hear the whole corporate America mainstream argument. And I agree. But Comeback was talking about children, and I say, let a child be a child. That is probably the one time in their life where they can wear their hair a certain way as an expression of who they are.

Hell, I had a high-top fade, with a step in it, and dyed the step auburn. Was that corporate America? No. But I was fif-freakin-teen! And yes, I wanted to look like Big Daddy Kane and all them.

So I don’t think there’s a problem with how children wear their hair… the problem is when they start getting neck tattoos and thinking a $40,000 necklace is something to aspire to. But the focus on the hair actually surprises me, especially coming from Black women.

White women can be just as unforgiving and unrelenting as black women. And it’s a different type of annoying, one that can be worse than the side-eyeing and neckrolling.

Some white women are so truly ignorant that they lack tact. They say inappropriate things in front of people. Well, that’s all people in general, but you get my point.

It was quite a few things…any specific questions? The ones that stand out to me are: In the comic, Wolverine & Sabretooth were not brothers, his relationship with his woman (Silver Fox) was actually false memories implanted into his brain by Weapon X (the team that gave him adamantium), and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) never became the crazy weirdo villain he was at the end of the movie.

@ Nicki – @V: Wow, that was paint by numbers???? I love it. .

It was pretty cool. At first I was thinking, I don’t know how this is going to turn out. The later it got and the more people were sipping, the harder it was to paint in the lines. But it came out really sweet. The sketch was of this chick I went to high school with who won a gold at the Olympics.

let a child be a child. That is probably the one time in their life where they can wear their hair a certain way as an expression of who they are. .

I kind of agree with this. I went to a baseball game with coworkers one time and a 2520 little boy had a mohawk. His daddy was like we figured this was the best time to let him do it….no school pictures coming up and he really wanted one. We figured now would be best.

@ Damon Some white women are so truly ignorant that they lack tact. They say inappropriate things in front of people. Well, that’s all people in general, but you get my point. .

I think 2520’s as a whole lack couth.

additionally alot of parents are INFLUENCING this maddness

@Comeback: This is a gray area. I mean, we expect parents to teach kids how to behave in public, etc, but then ridicule them when they teach them how to wear their hair? A parent who is Muslim or Jewish teach their kids not to eat pork, is that BS for deciding an issue for a child? It’s a gray area. My take is teach your child how to be a constructive member of society… whatever that looks like. I mean, my parents influenced me to be Baptist just by raising me in their house. Is that fair? But such teachings, though I’m don’t agree with them all now, still taught me to be constructive in society.

So we have to give parents leeway with their kids. Our parents teaching us that we’re special beacause we’re Black could be called hopping on a bandwagon (Kwanzaa anyone?), or it could be an education of our people that inspires locks just like the Jamaicans or African names or the practice of Yoruba.

@Damon Question for you: Can you expound upon this for me: “1. Insecure black women?”

    1. This is old news but automatically judge a sista based on skin color. For as many dark skin ” I was treated bad stories” there are just as many light-skin stories too. All of us got those stories…and to 2520s we still ninjas no matter the color.

    2. Because one brotha didn’t given them what they wanted i.e. a ring, a relationship, extra cheese on a burger..then ALL BLACK MEN AIN’T S–T. I really hate when women say that in my presence. I always counter them with “Maybe you aren’t a good black woman”. It shows that you don’t have enough confidence in yourself to know that there is another brother out there for you.

    3. Women who want to do certain things but don’t because they are worried about other people’s opinions especially family. If you want to move, move, go back to school, sign up for classes, sleep with dude on the second date, buy a condom. I’ve seen too many black women kill their dreams because “Big Mama said, my church wouldn’t approve, the Bible said,etc..” They don’t realize that people like to define you and when you go outside that definition, they become threatened and try to hold you down…a la Jesse and Barack.

    4. Sistas who downplay their accomplishments so as not to offend family or a potential mate. I got a girlfriend in Philly who by herself, went to Howard, transferred to Temple and then got TWO advanced degrees from UPenn while working full-time and she will tell guys that she works as a bank teller to get a date. WTF???? And her extended family cracked on her for years about “being 29 with a back pack” (she is now 39). And she isn’t the only one doing this. But she wants to date so she does this. I told her to move from Philly. I love my black men but I will be d—- I will hide my accomplishments so you can feel better.

@COCO: sorry for the delay …

“But a black man can find an easy black woman if that’s what he wants. It’s just gonna take you a little bit of time …”

    @ damon – please define/explain/expond. grazie!

I’m saying that find an easy black woman is a little more difficult than it is to find an easy 2520 (I know what it is, but someone breakdown how you get from “white woman” to “2520,” please) …

Now, I’m not saying that it’s difficult or easy in general. I just know that one is easier than the other, and that’s why “some” black men choose to pursue 2520s.

Some of them just have more in common with them. That’s life. But I prefer black women. Call me crazy, but I tend to like women who look like me in some regard.

This is going to sound horrible on some level, but I want my kids to look like me. smh.

““You think you cute because you’re light skin. You aint all of that”.

I say that because my sister is light skin (with green eyes) and she used to get this all the time. Girls in school hated her.”

“I had loads of mess from being light. and having big lips… all that mess”

This may be true but on a whole light-skinned is more accepted. With dark-skinned folks the nonsense starts early like 5 or 6 yrs old.

I understand this. But I have met A LOT of women that were stuck-up and I think their skin-color did play a role in it. When people treat you special because your lighter you will have people like that.

@ damon – a white guy told my sister that. he was interested in her but told her he could never be with her because he could have kids that didn’t look like him. smh. lol.

the reason i’m so interested is because on many levels i relation more with the 2520’s than with black people…in general. i didn’t grow up with black people at all..except when we lived in l.a. when i was younger. grew up in hawaii (asian influence) then moved to seattle (white influence) now i live in austin and for the first time, i’m discovering my “black” side if that makes any sense. but because i look black, that’s who i’m grouped with so when you say white women are easier, i just wonder what that means….and how that might pertain to me.

@Coco “I’m trying to figure out how white women did this. After J-Lo, white people “rediscovered” big butts, and suddenly, all these white women went from flat to thick.

J-Lo was acceptable because she was Latina and she was desired by white men in the movies she acted in so ww jumped on it. Lil secret I’ll tell you…a lot of the 2520s wore minimizers for years to cover the butt (learned that back in high school) plus these white teenage girls got booty now my lil brother swears it is the hormones in chicken and milk that did it…LOL!!

“bgrits…but i don’t think the fault falls on the man for this one. no one is MAKING her dumb herself down but herself. she needs to be proud of what she’s done for herself and keep living…an awesome man will pop up when she least expects it. if she’s 39 and the bank teller thing hasn’t worked i would ditch that as it doesn’t seem to be working. and really? does a bright woman like that just want ANY man?”

You are correct that I can’t blame the men necessarily but it is a friggin epidemic now. It has been this theme running in the background among us that black women are self-sacrificial and I hate it. Plus many women put timelines on things and when the deadline gets close then they start settling. I forgot to mention that was she married before and her ex-husband told her before they got married they he would help her pay for school when she talked about UPENN. After the wedding, he reneged because he gave her the ring so she should’ve been satisfied (his words)so she got loans instead and later divorced him.

    @CBG
“I also wonder why talk shows and mainstream mags have never addressed the phenom of women who end up married to these “quasi single men”.

Because then the secret would be out and some men would be at a loss. Deb’s real issue is that she want to get lovin and attention from a man and she sets a better example if she is single. Did you peep how she said Angie was born when she was 18 so she possibly met Irv when she was 20 so she doesn’t even know who she is.

Concerning the lock issue, I don’t think of Lil Wayne when I see a kid with locks. I see someone who lives in a time when you can wear them without all the extreme backlash they used to invite by wearing locks.

“@ C0.. the bank teller thing is a bit much..but i think ALL women dumb it down at some point and time in courtship and in a relationship.”

Please expand on this…I hope you mean the silly stuff like “fix my sink, blah blah”.

@VRENEE “@ Coco – Not really all of them, but I feel they ask/inappropiate things on the regular. And they’re NOSEY!! They refuse to pick up on cues when people don’t want to talk about personal stuff. ”

It is stuff held over from slavery where Ms. Ann trusted her slave more than her own family since the slave was insignificant so she told the business. I use their openess as a weapon because blackmail is bytch!!!!

@Hugh “CBG/Bgrits: “driven women aren’t exactly whats hot in the streets…because with drive usually come the associated stuff.”

This is because some men who are looking for something serious are scared these women will put their career in front of them.”

    Could you please explain?

Now if you are talking about the sistas who scream ” I DON”T NEED A MAN TO BUY ME ISH…blah blah” I can see your point. But the sista who just stated her job title and the guy cowers away..that guy needs to keep it moving.

Bgrits: “This is because some men who are looking for something serious are scared these women will put their career in front of them.” Could you please explain?”

Easiest way to explain: if you saw the movie Why Did I Get Married, it’s the Tyler Perry/Sharon Leal marriage. If a woman puts becoming partner/advancing her career in front of her husband/family or having children, a lot of men will shy away. Some things are more important than money and career.

If a woman doesn’t agree, that’s fine. It just means the two of you aren’t compatible.

@ Hewie i think this is a misconception that men step to “self-sufficient” women with. Long term if a man is the provider…he’s got to step that part of his game up..most women aren’t going to ride out on sinking ships. So thats where you come to a woman with a solid 5-10 year plan. I can agree with your sinking ship point, but many career-minded women aren’t sacrificing their career to play mommy/wife.

It’s a conundrum because those types of women want men that make what they make or more. The problem is the men that make what they make are smart enough to stay the hell away from them. They see how their prototypes act in the office, and don’t want to willingly enter nuptuals with those cutthroat-type women.

    Re: light vs. dark

I have been living in the US for a little over 8 years now. Prior to that, it never occurred to me that my shade of black had a certain importance (except from some comments here and there that were discounted because coming from unimportant folks…

But seriously, as a darker-than-dark black woman, from what I have seen, light skin people get more flack than dark-skinned ones do… Maybe this is the backslash from earlier years of light-skin preference but that has been my experience.

I have a friend who absolutely insists on marrying or dating a light-skin man with good hair because she has pretty deep-rooted issues herself… I think the light skin thing is the first thing to be blamed and allows people not to realize/work on their own issues.

Then again, I have only percieved a tiny tip of the iceberg. So consider this my $0.02.

    @ Offy

You a hot mess! I think the effect would have been better if I were able to listen to the sound with it. As it was…all I saw was a girl rumpshaking. Not anything I haven’t seen before.

@ Shawnta’ – I loved Columbus! I think partly because it has a lot of transiets and there is always something to do. I used to go at least once a month. I haven’t been in a couple of months..summer is coming up and they have a lot of festivals, so Ill be going back more often.

LOL about IHOP. I think I’m IHOP’ed out.

@Off “@Bgrits: You can TEACH it?!? Do tell.”

A lot of it has to do with your mind and the physical is secondary. Can’t tell you suga because then there is no mystery for you.

@Jada I’ve taught them how to p-whip a man (but not in a negative way).

Concerning the video, you need to hear the music to appreciate it but I feel where you are coming from.

I agree completely… this takes stamina and control that is hard to sustain. And the same goes for s3x… a dude who can run a marathon may be puffin for air after some rapid-succession stroking for 10 min non-stop. It’s just a different mindset and use of stamina…. and this girl in the video could hula hoop a dude into silly puddy…. leave him all crumpled up in the corner somewhere like an old sock..

I wanted to market the idea to my local gym… African Dances, most specially Coupe Decalle and the likes… I mean it’s a skill I can use to make money…

Or just look for an empty room and start making flyers… Introductory classes on saturday mornings at $20 or something?

By the way, thanks to your post on our blue-collar skills, I’m starting my semi-catering thing this week… I am just starting with one product, a yogurt based drink/dessert very popular in West Africa, Dêguê…
I’ll tell y’all how it goes! Thanks for sparking ideas! :)

But it’s basically, some sort of couscous made out of mil (don’t know the English name for mil) mixed with homemade creamy and sweet yogourt.

@CBG: I’ve taken bellydance classes before. They are so much fun (and a lot of work). And you’re right…the women in my class (all ages) ate up everything the instructor said about what could be done with bellydancing. :-)
