Kathie Bates & Alfre Woodard In "The Family That Preys"

Kathie Bates & Alfre Woodard In "The Family That Preys"

As I sit writing this blog post tonight, I’m watching “The Family That Preys” on Apple TV. This is the same film that I avoided in the theatre and the same film I intentionally overlooked on my digital receiver. But I’m finding myself being somehow entertained and interested. The writing is better. The actors are better. This was a film I wasn’t supposed to like.

Moreover, I have a real soft spot for Tyler Perry. He’s not the same actor, producer, director he ways 5 or 10 years ago.

What are the films you weren’t supposed to like, but did?

“Mean Girls” and “A Walk to Remember” were movies I wasn’t supposed to like. I love them now, lol. I also didn’t expect to like Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” and “Family That Preys”…I was totally surprised b/c his other movies weren’t that great to me. Also, Beyonce’s new movie was ok….it wasn’t that painful to sit through.

    Good morning yaw!

    Thanks Ejam!

And why, oh why, did I feel the exact same way about Family That Preys… I rented it for a dolla, and was pleasantly surprised.

I am thinking and can’t think of a film that I thought I wouldn’t like and did.

Can I do the opposite- today is Opposite Day by the way.

I thought I’d like “W” and it sucked.

Not a Tyler Perry fan. I support the movies without Madea. Don’t particularly think the writing has gotten that much better. It’s gone from like a 2 to a 4.

The stories have gone from like a 3 to a 5. Can’t understand for the life of me why Alfree Woodard and Kathy Bates went Thelma & Louise. It wasn’t necessary. But the movie was somewhat entertaining & worth watching.

But I’ll scream at the screen for fake the next time one of his characters is in an obvious situation where he/she is being cheated on but plays stupid for 1 hour, 19 minutes of an 84-minute film, and then they start whooping arse when they realize what’s really good.

    **off soap box**

Bad Movies I like: Breaking All The Rules, Can’t Hardly Wait, Superbad, Zack & Miri Make A Porno … I probably could go on for days because I’ve seen entirely too many movies in my life and once owned over 250 DVDs, most of them horrible movies like “Shallow Hal.” I sold half of them back to stores because I felt guilty. I’m a movie snob at this point.

A Perfect World with Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner. For some reason I love that movie, can’t even explain it.

@Damon: I do not like Madea either. lol.

Ohhh, Comeback? I think this is one, Napoleon Dynamite.

I can watch that over and over and over again.

  12. Damon

@garcelle: I shouldn’t like “Mean Girls,” but it’s one of my favorite movies of all time (Top 20). No E. Lynn.

Not a fan of “Why Did I Get Married?” though it was entertaining. Too much outright stupidity on film … If Tyler Perry’s character said “I’m a doctor” one more time I would have slit my wrist.

And for every time the character Angie said something about “having a drink” I felt the same way, although it was funny the first few times. … And seriously, what black woman do you know would get off of a plane with her husband to drive while he flies with another woman? This manure was unrealistic.

    ***off soap box again***

@nicki: IDK, I know “W.” is tough to watch, but I like it because it gives you insight into W. and his presidency you otherwise wouldn’t have. … It is tough to watch, though.

@Damon: MAN. that is thee truth. I remember when those dumb plays started coming out.. my mama and granny would be sitting there cracking up, while I had a sour milk on my face. Straight c99nery. lol

And the movies? Oh god. They will watch that mess over and over and over again.

I was forced to see Madea Goes to Jail and you would have thought that they had conjured up the spirit of Martin Luther tha Kang to give the I have a dream speech again. That’s how crowded it was.

Its a GREAT FILM…maybe everyone likes Preys so much because our expectation was SOOO very low. LOL and you couldn’t help but to be surprised. I was expecting some cooning or Madea to make an entrancec…but it was straight dead pan acting all the way through.

Films that i’m not suppose to like but I do

The Mack, Willie Dynamite, and Dolemite movies.
I LOVE blaxploitation movies. Not all of them are bad to me. There some that are just down right TERRIBLE. I mean the bad ones are BAD.

    Harold and Kumar
These dudes had me cracking up.

Seth Rogan movies. This dude hasn’t disappointed me yet. His movies may not be Sundance material put it’s funny to me.

    Mornin’ Treehouse!

I love Tyler Perry movies…I actually prefer them over the plays. But I agree with Damon…I prefer the ones without Madea although Madea goes to jail was hilarious. Keep in mind, I really liked Obsessed…needless to say, I’m easy to entertain and very easy to please when it comes to movies for the most part.

Movies I wasn’t supposed to love but did…off the top of my head Juno and Beowulf come to mind. Juno was hilarious…I watched that one in cardio cinema at the gym…and that’s the only movie I’ve ever turned off my ipod for…and it kept me on the elliptical for all 90+ minutes…
As for Beowulf…it was shockingly entertaining. Did anyone else see that one?

  25. Coco
    April 30, 2009 | 7:47 am

oh…and I meant Madea Goes to Jail the movie…although the play wasn’t all bad.

I can’t even think of any right now but I will admit that I liked some of the Madea plays that I saw on DVD (running out of treehouse).

I looked at House of Payne last night because nothing else was on and I actually got into that new episode and surprised myself.

@Dr. J – ATL is entertaining. I like the dude, Jason Weaver from Thea. Remember he had an album too? :-) I also liked the dude with the cast on…to me, they made the movie funny. Lauren London is very pretty and her dimples are cute (No Ellen).

And as far as The Wash goes…I don’t think I’ve watched it from beginning to end. However, my husband also can’t get enough of this one.

@Nicki Sunshine – I hear you; people do ride him hard. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely think he should be held accountable for his decision making, strategies & policies and not given a free pass but the effects of some of the policies he’s implementing won’t be known for quite awhile so, people should at least give him a chance and see if maybe just maybe he’s onto something.

    Good Morning All,

I saw Preys in the theatre, I’m a huge Tyler fan via the box office…I don’t really do his sitcom. I thoroughly enjoyed it and expected to.

Pleasantly Surprised or Guiltfully Ashamed of:

    Cadillac Records
Balla Blockin(i so hate to admit this)
    Roll Bounce
    The Departed
Slumdog Millionaire(yes people, i didn’t want to buy into the hype)
Smokin Aces(really surprised by this one)
    What Dreams May Come

And there’s another one whose name won’t come to mind, but he was building a house by the ocean for this family…they were obviously having some serious problems, but he died before it was completed, and his family completed it and left the house to the man he left in a wheelchair after an accident that happened years before…it was such a good movie. I can’t believe I can’t remember the name.

@Nick… Exactly I said if I’m ever around his parents I am definitely gonna say you have “taught” him well…. My momma always drilled in us that whatever we did was gonna get back to her….

But the mixed crowd sleepover was very interesting.. Mind you it was 2 beds, a pullout couch, and my aunt had brought an air mattress…. The 2520 kids kept asking where is everyone gonna sleep (they thought they were gonna have their own room uhhh no)…. The lil black kids knew it was a get in where you fit in situation… That was so funny to me…

    Morning y’all.

I’m reading and y’all are listing GREAT movies like Seth Rogan movies, Juno, Judd Apatow movies…. etc… Those are far from being bad movies IMO…

Mean girls has got to be one of the best written high-school comedy ever.

I am not into Tyler Perry movies in general (don’t understand the humor) but I thought Why did I get married was ok (although very predictable) and I actually enjoyed Daddy Little Girls…(Elba nonwithstanding).

One great movie I didn’t expect to like was Ray. I usually do not enjoy biographies, don’t care for them. But Ray was absolutely outstanding and blew my mind.

I watch so many movies that I’m drawing a blank on movies I thought I would like but didn’t. (The opposite is easier to find).

And then one year at a homecoming this girl who don’t even talk me was from a far and was like you pregnant….. I was like nope just got a gut.. And she was like you look good you look good… Me and my friend were dying like she can’t even play that off…

And at my uncle’s 50th party somebody had said something to my mom like are you gonna to be a grandma. And my mom like not that I know of….. Me and my sister was dying and went through pictures like I wonder which one they were talkin about…

But my sis said there’s rumors about her at the school that she teaches at that she’s pregnant….She be callin me like if one more person come to me askin if I’m pregnant…

I’m not Shawnta but I’ll reply… Lol! I adore Steve Carell. His deadpan humor is great! But, I watched the english version of the office starring one of the greates comics of our times Ricky Gervais… so I haven’t followed this version religiously. *DOA*

Old folks kill me with their terms. Instead of bisexual my momma says “AC/DC” like the switchinh electrical current.

Who the heck sings that loney stoner song? It constantly stays in my head.

@80s Well you know if you get multiples you can always go to the TLC channel and make that paper!!!

    “Do u get mad?”

No not really. Their intentions aren’t bad so it doesn’t bother me. I tell them that I could either do it the ideal way or the other way.

“Let me top that for you, B… My uncle asked if I was “funny.” And u know what they mean when old folks say funny”

LOL. Word? How is your uncle trying to play you? LOL.

I couldn’t read the books CoCo. I tried reading the first one and it was so elementary I felt like I was back in 2nd grade. My homegirl (who has read all of them) said as they got older they become more adult like books….but the first one had already turned me off. But the movies are EXCELLENT.
