As you can tell, I’ve been really on a “mind your business” choo choo train lately, so it seems to me a parent wouldn’t get a pass, right?
But, if you ever actually read on TheComeback Girl.com about me telling Mama Comeback “to mind her damn business” it will be in a nut house with both hands tied behind my back talking to my imaginary friends, updating this blog on my laptop in a padded cell. My @zz would have gone that plum deliciously crazy. I’m big on respecting my elders. I’m even bigger on respecting my Mama and yes, even in some of his absence, Daddy Comeback too.
***note: no spoilers contained herein***But after watching TD Jakes’s new movie: “Not Easily Broken” on Friday with my ace boom coon, I got to thinking about parental involvement and influence in their grown children’s relationships. Clarice’s (Taraji Henson) mother played by the mother of all mothers, Jennifer Lewis, single- handedly tested the ties of her daughter’s marriage to (Dave) Morris Chestnut.
***A.D.D., refocus away from all those basketball scenes and Chestnut’s glistening upperbody.***
There was a poignent exchange towards the end of the film which really explores the beliefs our parents (shaped by their own experiences) give us (either verbally or through their own actions), the very beliefs which either lead to their grown children’s success or failure in the matters of the heart. I really felt that at the core of Clarice’s mother’s overinvolvement was NOT just a need to protect, but sadly some element of jealously too, though seemingly unconsious sparked by her own failed marriage.
I know generally most of us don’t consult our parents on our romantic choices and decisions. But have you ever told an “overinvolved” parent or another family member, respectfully to: “mind your business” to the tune of deflection or even a lie (ie, everything’s coo with us Papa Dukes)? How much does your parent’s opinion matter regarding your suitor(s) or lady friend(s)? Have you ever ditched somebody because Daddy said she was a floosey? or Mama said he was a jerk? Have you ever involved your parent in a relationship dispute you were having with your partner? Have they ever “involved themselves”? (this happened inadvertenly once, and Comeback Mama PUBLICALLY took his side!!! bad news all the way around lol.)
What about a parent who seems invested in you making it work with someone (a someone you know isn’t right for you) that’d you’d rather just tell Mama/Daddy “well why don’t you date/marry him/her then?”, though you can’t say it exactly like that because you like all your teeth?
For those of you who saw “Biggie”, anything poignant in that film?
Have I finally convinced everybody’s @zz from my previous post to stay and watch movie credits? Or yall still bouncin when they start to roll, beating traffic home on a Friday night (to do what, I’m not sure), not honoring the film process?

My mom used to always be in my business until one day I got fed up and told her to mind her own business. It initially didn’t go over well, leading to a few weeks of the silent treatment. But she eventually came around and even began to respect my request.

@ Teacia…I still haven’t been able to tell my parent or anybody else’s to mind they bizwax, BUT i do think there are other ways to let someone know when they’ve crossed the line, even when they have the best intentions to see you happy. Because of my mothers own inability to sort of get it right, she’s not the first person i go to or take serious advice from in matters of the heart. I will however listen to any major concerns ie, “he looks like a murderer”..stuff like that.
normally if she’s goo goo gaa gaa over ANY guy (and I’ve only bought 3 home my whole life-since 16)…im suspcious. like she really really likes him..something is terribly wrong LOL.

Anyways, I was thinking about how fine MC was in that movie too. But he was such a pushover he really could have stood up a lot sooner, but I will also say that Clarice’s character had sort of a Mommy Syndrome…(might have to write about that)

Morning yall, I didn’t see the movie I will go check it out tonight.
My mother influences a lot of my choices (Even tho she doesn’t know it). She has met 5 men that has been a part of my life at some point or another. I usually only speak about men when I have been seriously involved. She hasn’t met the man I have been dating yet but she knows all about him. When she first asked about him it was rather funny because I wasn’t hesitant at all to tell her everything (usually I am because she is so judgmental). She likes him and is actually rooting for him. Not sure if thats good or bad lol…
Sometimes we do things because we want the most important people in our lives to be happy, I know my mom likes this guy and I just need to be sure I am not falling into the trap of trying to live out “her” happy ending and not my own….
Over all its been good to have my family in my business and that hasn’t really been the case my whole life (in reference to love). They have been very supportive and Honest with me and I appreciate them for that.

This is true. Clarice was def all Jekyll and Hyde (like the first day back home) she just exploded in Sunshine when her mama showed up. I know from my own personal experiences (that’s right L has stood up to Mama Jac) it can be done respectfully….
Comeback-I have to ask this for sure…why did a kid have to die…I almost holla’d out for real when that happened. But yeah…anyways…and I feel like the whole idea of Maeve Quinlan being in the movie made it even more…hmm..something
My parents never really got up into my business about relationships or anything involving men. My Mother stays on my back about my health though. Considering I was born with Sickle Cell Disease and she’s been the one there through all the crisis, I guess it’s her right.
When I want her to back off I’ll just develop my annoyed tone. She’ll usually leave me alone for a lil while when I do that.
p.s in regards to my face
I spent the whole weekend nurturing it. I purchased the “olay” facial wash for sensitive skin, which you can use as many times as you want a day without drying out your face or irritating it.
I also have vitamin “e” capsules to put on my face. In the morning I cut open the capsule and pour out the sticky stuff, mix it with my coco butter lotion and put it on my face. At night I use the vitamin e only. So far I am seeing a big change, my face looks cleaner and not so dried out and It feels much softer and looks softer too!
and best of all the olay is only 5 bucks! Thanks Nicki for the tips my bestie gave me the vitamine e tip.

@ Mik…seriously this is deep rhat here.. I think this is one of my fears and thoughts too. A parent who on some small level wants to live viacariously through you..not on purpose even, just because they have a ton of their own regrets that they can’t figure out yet how to fix.

@ Holister…i agree with this..there is a book out called “how to duck a suckah” written by a former “pimp”..i love to here how men who used to game..what they think about modern relationships and how that ONE woman turned their whole life around. Fascinating stuff indeed.

In regards to the Mr S ight now its not so good, he will hold an occasional convo via text message, but he will NOT call which means he is real mad cuz we always talk on the phone. I am not sure when we are gonna be able to see each other, his car is being worked on this week and he has school Wednesday Thursday and Friday so he can’t come to town unless his car is fixed today or tomorrow.
He did say he missed me, but is unsure of what to do about the situation. He says after we talk, he can make a decision and go from there.

One time she went to the emergency room and a doctor was like how long have you had it.The sad thing is he was serious. Making my mother proud of me in general is very important to me. The decisions on who I date are influenced indirectly by her in the sense that I know she didnt pay 20k a year for private school k-12 and then fund some of my additional education for me to end up with “bubba” from se (sorry bubba) .. Yea 80’s I went to go check some gyms one actually has that kick boxing class like you went to. They have a class tomorrow at 6, I dunno if i can make it but I got a free trial for 7 days so hopefully I can get around to all the classes.

Come to find out it wasn’t even kickboxing.. But it was this older black man and it was more like aerobics…. But he said he rotates the style of the classes so we’ll see how it goes. Well as a student that worked thru school my moms really didnt get a chance to butt into my life…college was too busy doing that.
She, I believe cringed at the reality that I like so many Americans gambled with higher ed at the exclusivity of everything else. At 24 she saw that working+school didnt make me a real dateable guy (being a film major didnt help at all). The only real excitement she saw was the filmmaking not the potential GF’s. Times changed, women changed with them and in that some (women)ideals got comprimised and/or discarded (maybe somewhat ambivelantly). She never thought those ideals would include hers too. Still use to the court and date thing she didnt get teh modern day dating pattern. I wasnt a commitment-phobe I knew “romance” could only go so far. So I told her I never want to be the reason a women doesnt reach her potential (something I think you guys allow men to do) if that meant taking myself “off the market” cuz potential doesnt keep anyone warm then I did that…should “She” have stayed along to see I wasnt frontin-”she” could have and my moms would have saw a GF of mine before her death but that would have been a lie…I think what we cant do is lie to our parents to appease their egos. We have to give it to em straight no chaser as to who we are and what this world (since our births) is not the nostalgia that keep wishing it was. We are shaped by our time as just as much if not more so than by our parents.

@Comeback: NYU and I must say I was not a “tradtional” student. My advisor coined the term “asynchronous” schedule or life that I had at the time…the average age was 27 not 18. Most of us were in relationships at the crossroads or not in em at all. Most had kids, it was a life about college I never knew existed. In fact these adult students are bankrolling all institutions these days since we pay RIGHT then and there, and dont have Mom and Dad ready to rescue if the school is beneath our expectations. Yes we do the loan thing buts thats to supplement income not to replace it. I had to go though at the time in 96 the same equipment I own now would have cost about 20k easy, but now a good cam and G4 for goes for about 10k. Yet if I had to give advice on school I still say its all on A) your fam -are they really ready to support a college student? (here is when as blacks we get all mushy, well if you would LIKE me to go BUT if you know we cant as a fam support it then that should be put on the table)
B) Your major: Hard and Soft sciences yea you gotta go, but biz management or anything in the arts…buy the books, take seminar classes get hands on with it before you really decide to go.
