Zora Neale Hurston
I’ve decided that there IS in fact a black blog Renaissance. And the internet is the Cotton Club negro Algonquin Round Table.
Just like Harlem, I’m Dorothy West (the Posthumous Literary Comeback Girl), with the same passion for MV. Because being myself just won’t do. Not for the black blog renaissance. I hear Zora Neale Hurston is up for grabs, anybody want to be her?
Its 2009. And this is a beef, a blog beef, that may or may not offend you.
This kind of beef might just “crawl right up my leg and sit in my lap” (workcite: my pastor), and hurt my own dam!n feelings. I’ve always wanted to see if I could actually offend myself, perhaps this post will. It’s inspired by Bam Cabral’s post. Its ok to be inspired by another right? “Ideas” aren’t really new or unique are they?
Just like the black blog renaissance (oh, yeah don’t forget to cite me, I founded this movement 45 minutes ago), “ideas” reside in an intellectual factory rolling down a conveyor belt waiting to be reproduced re-interpreted or flat out copied with a backlink somewhere. Seriously, imitation is a form of flattery when kindred blog spirits understand the creative process.
It’s annoying as all he!l when you have people dressed for the wrong party, wearing two left Jimmy Choo’s for a get together over your cousin Man Man’s house in the hood in an “emerging” location.
Everybody’s got a blog. Everybody’s working on a book or some other creative project whereby having an audience counts. Everyone must update every single day to sharpen their craft, because that’s what your creative writing professor told you to do. To be a better writer you must write. But you decided you wanted to be paid, drive a Range, take the backdoor into your life’s calling. That’s everybody’s story right?
And then “Al Gore invented the internet”. Black blogs started with gossip, and a whole lot of it. Nothing makes a black woman feel better about herself more, than looking at another “diva’s” ashy elbows. Yes!!! Connect FOUR all the dots. Iman has a hammertoe bunion, I am worthy. Let me start a gossip blog. Yes, my passion is really sea water diving. But, I think I’d much rather saturate the mamajama with a little more of the same….and someone else’s.
A few more twists and turns. And then a million and one ways to demonstrate the many creative ways to spell pu$$y, pen!is, and vagin!a and explore its respective plight. Adsense pays for a frustrated bean counter’s webhosting service. S/He masquerades as someone really cool and anonymous by day. Boring as paint drying by night who couldn’t get a offline party started with a kerosene lamp and a blow torch. Can an IP resolve an unfulfilled identity? No, but a black blog can. I’m offended…BINGO!!! (what do I win for hurting my own feelings?)
The Comeback Girl got introspective in November 2007. Dumped a man and lost some weight (literal and figurative) in 2008 and wanted to inspire women in the process.
My blog beef.
Duplication. Rinse. Repeat.
People chasing dreams that aren’t even their own. Passions undefined. Misaligned. I pray the day when I run out of something interesting to say, in a way that belongs to me (or even someone else’s work, I’m no longer able to fully steal “re-energize”,->wordpress, ->my dashboard, ->settings, -> delete.
no risk, no rinse, no repeat.
This was in interesting perspective. I love the way you think. Black blogs, just like black people run the gambit and are written testament to our unique and eclectic “being”. I like it.
Which figure from the Black Renaissance would you cast me as, CBG?
I’m sick and up late watching The Other Sister (great movie). Moving on….I absolutely love Dorothy West…The Wedding was my book as well as Zora Neale’s Their Eyes. The symbolism and complexities of each are certainly worth pondering.
Anyway, thank GOD for the internet. It allowed for others to get their story out in an affordable way. I’m under the influence that everyone has a story, just not everyone is meant to tell their story with words. And that’s where dance, art, painting, and other forms of expression, traditional and non, come in.
Right now at this very moment we are all affecting another’s life, be it our blogs, a thought, a smile, a word of encouragment, or a negative comment. But we were meant to affect that person, in that moment, and in that way.
And as you said, the problem comes in when the form of expression chosen doesn’t quite speak to the individual in ways another form would. Then they find themselves duplicating someone else. It’s one thing to be inspired, another to be a stealer.

I have a question I need to ask so I can finish this piece I started. I want you guys’ opinions.
So.
I was surprised to wake up with a trackback to the “Blogger’s Please,” post, but I like it!
I have to get to work so there isn’t much I have time to say here however, there are a couple things I think relevant enough to cause me a slight delay.
1. The Gossip Sites are so sad. I feel like sometimes people of color refuse to explore the talent that God gave them for exploiting them selves for some old dead white men. While I can admit I am revamping the blog, my image and my intent on the net – I am doing to to grow in the direction I believe I am being called in.
Not to develop new and slanderous nick names for Beyonce or her weave.
2. I believe that one day, and very soon, those who take the time to discover their selves will be rewarded in ways those who continue to duplicate can not understand or appreciate.
It’s like owning a Mac. You don’t get it, till you get one.

Last year, my pastor put us on a 45 day Gossip Fast. I failed. I lasted about a week, but that daggone BOSSIP killed me.

The internet has forged a new frontier a way for people to be heard and a higher level of expression. what we are never changes that is as simple as the strands that make up our dna. but who we? is constantly evolving and changing as we grow and develop into better things.
My story? has yet to be written, ill leave that up to someone who’s watching my life. right now I’m too busy writing the stories that are on my heart…

I take it you’re frustrated about blogging for some reason. Did your hiatus do this to you?
I’m already bored with my blog and only write for others now, it’s not something I even want to do anymore. Maybe I’ll feel differently about it tomorrow…there’s just too much going on in my real life to devote so much time to my e-life.
But I feel on the e-famous bloggers who don’t have shat going on in their offline lives. The whole alter-ego things I could never really get with…it’s cowardly if you ask me.

I have read Black blogs and I enjoy the diversity. I don’t get into the gossip ones. I enjoy the political and non-political blogs. What i really like is that I get to talk to Black people that are diverse. Even in my group of friends I can only discuss a few things.

I just wanted to stop by real quick to say Hi. My schedule is jam packed for January but no complaints because in this case, being busy means I have a contract and with the layoffs and other bad news in the publishing business as of late, I’m doing A-ok compared to other folks. I will be working on edits for one book and I am on deadline to complete another manuscript, so I will be in and out this month.
Anyway, I hope everyone’s year is off to a good start. (I’ll try to catch up on everyone’s blogs either first thing in the morning or after I finish my work for the day.)

lol yall, I was making french fries to go with my sloppy joes.
see what had happen wuz, I had the fire on high and let it get too hot for 1. For 2. I didn’t want to burn myself so I did the infamous THROW the fries into the pot and wouldn’t cha know the grease spilled over!!
I was horrified!! I hurried up and turned off the eye and moved the pot and by that time the flames was way high and I’m panicked so im standing there watching the blaze trying to think of what to do
1st option Run down the halls screaming fire!! fire!!! (I quicky realized this wouldn’t work because I hadn’t called the fire department yet and probably would end up burning down the building.
2nd option was to call the fire dept (but then I realized it would be to late and the house would be burnt down)
3rd option was to pour water on the fire (But I realized after watching to much tv that you NEVER put water on a grease fire)
4th option beat the flames with a towel ( I also saw this on tv)
So I grabbed the kitchen towel and started beating the flames (not knowing what the hell i was doing and praying to Jesus I didn’t kill myself) Smoke alarms going off and everything smoke going all through the apartment, finally the towel killed the flames (praise Jesus)
the only real damage was to the 2 eye knobs on one side of the stove, and this little metal thing that got all bent up. I saw my life flash before my eyes and I thought me and my KAT (worksite kim) was a goner!

my roommates gonna come back from vacation like wtf happen in the kitchen?? lol
so now all of us have finally made some contribution to messing up the kitchen. One of my roommates left water boiling and I guess instead of moving the burning pot to the other eye she put it on the counter, so its a big round burnt spot on the kitchen counter.

Good post Comeback. Way to start the new year off strong. I’m loving the movement…. I don’t think that blogging is holding us back. I really feel as though it’s another means of expression. I admire people who have the tenacity and dedication to manage a blog. I myself am just trying to master personal journaling (we’ll see how long it lasts…)
On a more personal note, ya’ll should know that I’m commenting live from my bed cause I got a promotion and I work from home now – WOO HOO!!! I read ybf on occasion when I wanna depress myself. Its not really a super gossipy site, mostly pictures which allow you to create your own story about the setting, not knowing the real truth. reading the gossip about the bad stuff wouldn’t make me feel better at all.
I always imagine the life of the celebs full of fun and fabness which make me wish I was one of them EVEEEEEEN JUST FOR A DAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, id roll outta bed in the mornin and put on what I wanted n gooooooooo….

Ok. Something that MUST STOP in 09 is sistas feeling bad if they’re not married by a certain age! When did our self-worth become determined by whether or not we’re married? Too many fabulous women are calling themselves failures because they’re not married by 25, 30, 35 – whatever the age may be. These women own multiple properties, have extensive educational backgrounds, make profound impacts on the live of other through their work or volunteerism and STILL consider themselves failures for something they have absolutely no control over. Yes, it’s easy to settle and marry just anyone but it takes a real woman to have standards and wait for she knows she deserves. Marriage requires that two people make a commitment to each other. If you’re ready and someone else isn’t, it’s not your fault nor does it mean you should settle.

Diversity in interests and thought. I have read black political blogs, black blogs about sports, and life in general. Sometimes Black people can be seen as your rap music listening, soul food eating, apathetic politcally, and not taken serious. Through the blogs I have seen people that at least present themselves as the opposite.

Nicki I used to actually want to be an actor when I was younger, I still kinda do actually but life has taken me a different direction. I am thinkin maybe when get outta debt I can hit up hollywood and do a couple of auditions for a mcdonalds commercial or somethin. I did a play with a performing arts group and we performed for MLK day and then went to South Africa to perform for the elementary school kids there. I am not really sure why I stopped acting.

I have read a lotta stories about folks getting married and it really never makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside but eva’s story seemed so sweet it just made me wanna be here. She seems to be living in a fairy tale. I am sure her life isn’t/hasn’t always been perfect but she has come a long way and now she has got a great life and seemingly great man…..

I was over here getting my comment ready for today’s topic and I thought about Gabriel Union and it’s ironic that you mentioned that Comeback..
Now I’ll go to the gossip sites but for entertainment purposes only. But I do have a problem with a lot of the negative posts because it seems as if it’s negative for no reason.. So I could see where Gabriel Union was coming from. And it’s sad that these gossip sites response is that at least we are giving you publicity. So you should be happy even though it’s bad…. Because they had shunned her for a while after she made those comments… GTFOHWDBS….
But I think that now some people’s motivation for blogs is the money aspect. I don’t know how all that stuff works with the ads and what not but the chick from YBF is making 6 figures and Perez Hilton I believe is bringin in a lot of money now based off of blogging…. But after a while all of those gossip sites just tend to run together so if you see one then you’ve seen them all.

Yea, I feel you. Eva HAS had the golden touch lately. And that pic posted on YBF of them looking all happy does give you a tinge of jealousy. I just am trying not to fall victim to it.
I guess I should give you some background – I had lunch with one of my friends from highschool who just got married/had a baby last year. During the course of catching up she asked how do I “deal with being lonely.” I was taken aback. I have what I believe to be a great life and am offended that someone could believe I wasn’t complete just cause I’m not married with kids.
Don’t worry, I didn’t respond with ignorance…I simply informed her that I wasn’t lonely, enjoyed every moment of my fabulous life and made a mental note to add her and her controlling husband/their facade of a marriage to my prayer list.

@ Daisy..this is true..i had lunch with my girlfriend this weekend. AND SHE IS SEEING A FERTILITY specialist at 32 (i hope she doesn’t find this blog)…and she is obsessed with getting preggers FIRST with her BF. Like its all we talk about. AND THEN MARRIED. I feel like sometimes im the last of the mohekians (sp). But I do know people who are married and did so early and ARE MISERABLE. They broke all the time. And its just constant confusion. I agree. My brother and I was talking about this. His movies represent the status quo some blacks or some middle class blacks believe in. i.e the go to school, church, and get a good job mentality. I really don’t see his stuff as being innovative or revolutionary. Maybe I missed it but I don’t really see him changing how black people think. Maybe its not his intent. His material caters to the church going black woman.

I think the jury is still out on him affecting change in mainstream film, tv and other media. This man is building a movie studio, will he be Orson Welles ?? prolly not…will he be shukin an jivin like Sandman..probably not either. I think you get in where you fit in. Evolve and move the audience.

have you ever read this book called “the four hour work week”, he’s got some really constructive ideas about transitioning your job to telecommuting…imma tell you its not all its cracked up to be. 1- i miss people. 2- your day gets HELLA extended. and people expect you to be always there because you are so close to your computer all the time. 8 hours can turn into 16 EASILY…oh and with a blog make that 20. lol

I agree somewhat. The problem I have with the always happy or funny black stories is that you can get too much of it. There needs to be a balance. Sometimes I feel that people always want light hearted stuff to avoid or not put in the effort to recognize and make an effort to solve issues our community has.

too me its all about perspective “Happyness” was a “happy story”. Im not saying slapstick all the way through, but Im not interested in figuring out a way to slit my wrists after the credits roll by either. You can affect change with humor and happiness. one of the steps in the book (and ive actually tried this once with success tho my work now was based home with travel)..is to ask. Just ask for 1 day out of the week. Make that day the MOST productive day ever. Ask for an increase of days…incrementally showing more productivity. etc. etc. But start with a day. Can you do some work from home? do you have access to the network? ccan you do some stuff without the network? research? list building, database stuff? etc etc.

because where i work is an upcomming market..it was defined as a remote contract. The trade off is the travel. but its not bad cause i get to see some of the people that ive worked with in a past life etc etc..
the phone stuff is hard…arent you in govt? private sector and a small office might even let you route the calls to your home. Filing is also difficult unless you are doing automation. like paper to electronic or some such like that.

First the Film stuff: TP is doin nothing different than say the Nat’l Lampoon movie franchises and like those each one that came out didnt seem to “push” the envelope. It could be said that NL’s apogee was”Animal House” in fact the critics for NL said the same things that TP’s critics say. That its fluff, not really funny and appeals to the LCD…and for him making money, so do porn producers…thats a weak point. Question is why is old ass Clint Eastwood not only making movies but REALLY GOOD ONES? TP couldnt see Clint if he was an optometrist..so whats the excuse for that one?

As for writing yea everyone has a story but everyone is not a story teller. Writers write, on the toilet, with the flu, at dinner, even sans pen and pad or anything to “write with”. They have to get whats in out-yet todays lit landscape gt altered. Rap, the web, ghetto lit all of these changed the barriers of entry. you want in the music biz, write (ghost is a HUGE option) a ryhme, wanna get your Terry Mcmillian on lie ya ass off about your life in “the game” if your not that convincing create a blog and lie on that.
Yet I like this blog and its affiliated blogs (I found my way here thru Three Ways to Take It) because it does what writing is supposed to do: it exposes something about the human experience..taht other wise would have remained unanswerd and mystery. We as humans tend to think that if something is frequnet and abundant, and usually there when we are there..that there is NO MYSTERY to it all..yea well School Daze opened me up to a world you just dont know about living in East New York, Brooklyn. So being the son of a very pro education progressive black woman, she was not a sorror. I think even my moms was miffed about the world of SD. Despite being a Southern women by birth and drilling college into my cranium she had no clue or any idea of what college on any level was about. Thats why writers write.
