Beyonce's Feminism & It's Big "Ego"

5

I can not stop playing Beyonce’s new jam, Ego. It is such a tight song. Primarily because I was almost tempted to vlog this out in some Choo’s. Secondly, us ladies sometimes just need to have a little ego. About our worth, about making better relationship choices, about being powerful while also balancing that with our need to be loved and giving love freely to deserving men. The feminism that I never learned at my esteemed YaYa institution suggests that ambition, self-respect, loving, and supporting your man can all harmoniously exist; one doesn’t have to take sides against the other(s).

***take dat Simone***

“Ego” also got me pondering about her relationship with Jay and that of her alter ego: Sasha Fierce, the title of her recent project that dropped yesterday and how Beyonce unknowingly sets the framework for feminism within the construct of her marriage and as a young woman. Ideally new and or young marriage doesn’t always have most women conceiving babies on the honeymoon. But I do love the seeming balance of autonomy and being wifey with her relationship.

I can’t wait to cater to my man, really. When in love, I get into this serious Martha Stewart mode, but I’m still Comeback Tiffy all day erryday. And oneday I’ll be somebody’s Mama too. Comeback Mama, Comeback Tiffy, Comeback Wife & Lover. And I’m not naive enough to believe that some of my ambition might need to go on sabbatical to take care of my home and my family. The ambitious side takes a back seat for a later reinvention, while motherhood takes the reigns.

***take dat Betty***

Let me let you know right now, my blog brother from another mother got it all wrong. LOL. He asked why Michelle Obama is not the new millenium’s spokeswoman for female empowerment. Well the answer is she is, but of another variety one who fits who I would like to be in another 10 or 11 years. But now some of the edge and some of the willful drive and determination (without kids) looks more like Sasha and less like little Sasha’s Mama (Mrs. Obama).

***take dat Marilyn***

Ladies why do you think this “new feminisim” bothers men so much? Is it even real to you?

Men why does this “new feminisim” bother you so much (and we can leave Jazmine Sullivan’s trite “bust your windows” out of the convo. Destroying property is not my idea of liberation k?) Do you even like the term “new feminisim” or is it meaningless to you? Does Michelle Obama represent a more ideal figure head for what the “new feminism” should represent?

    Good post Comeback Tiffy.

I think you’re right. I feel that women do need to be able to express themselves in different arenas.

Just because at 22 I am more comfortable as Michaela instead of Jaclynn (sometimes) doesn’t mean I am going to walk around in skimpy clothing or bust out any windows. It simply means I’ll walk straighter, smile more and feel more confident on the insides.

I think what he also failed to note was that not too long ago this same chick was singing “Just let me cater 2 u….” So what if she has an ego and goes to work everyday…she’s already told you you that she’s going to handle things @ home…so what are the men tripping about?

As far as Michelle goes she is the new Superwoman…and so are all the women here.

    Yes you are.

I don’t really even see it as “feminisim.” I see it as just plain survival. Women should not put their lives on hold waiting on a man or when you get a man, put your ambitions on hold. Just because you marry, dreams shouldn’t die. I don’t know who said being ambitious and being married couldn’t go hand in hand. Marriage is a partnership and if both parties work together–life together could be better than they both imagined. Secure men doen’t have issues with their wives succeeding.

One thing that kind of bothers me is that unfortunately mainstream media acts like Michelle represents a “new” phenomenon for Black women. She’s not. She’s only doing what other Black women have been doing for centuries. Black women have always had their man’s backs—even when he hasn’t always had ours. Black women are survivors and have had to juggle–the job–the family–and community duties. Our desire to succeed has resulted for wanting to or having to provide for our families.

Being ambitious is in most of our blood. It’s natural and has nothing to do with “feminisim.”

Shelia basically took the words out of my mouth. And thats what bothers men about this “feminism”. Women are all hyped up because they figured out that they can do what they should’ve already been doing: Loving and respecting themselves, as well as being able to pursue your dreams and be a cornerstone of a family. Today’s woman is strong enough to encompass all these things. Our elders, both men and women, have been trying to tell yall this for years. Why did it take a Beyonce album to click?

@ Shelia “I don’t know who said being ambitious and being married couldn’t go hand in hand.”

The reality and the practicality here is that many times it doesn’t particularly when children are involved. Let’s be honest women can have it all…but rarely all at the same time. I think feminism does belong in this conversation because if empowerment wasn’t what women needed particularly young black women-Beyonce wouldn’t be SOOO very successful with the content of these songs. My point however is that empowerment belongs in the conversation with and pertaining to the relationship WITH OUR MEN. Something that feminisim has NEVER been able to do. And some hip hop Shelia could use a little feminisim, particularly since music is just a petri dish so to speak of our collective.

ideally yes…survival and handling your business as a single person IS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN. I would tell anybody that they is STOOPID to wait on any man to pay your light bill. Get out there and make it do what it do ON YOUR OWN. What I am talking about (as you) is collective collaboration in a relationship, many black men talk a good game on paper. BUT in a relationship her ambition looks a little different. And is recieved differently as well. I don’t like the word initimidation-because i don’t believe that women should throw our success up at our suitors, our men, boyfriends, husbands…but let’s be real when ***some***black men get into relationships with very successful women-the conversations and tones become totally different. And there can be some “resentment” (beyonce song anyone?)

@ NO MO “Today’s woman is strong enough to encompass all these things. Our elders, both men and women, have been trying to tell yall this for years. ”

But did hip hop tell us this? Seems to be there have been two different messsages going on. Let me see if I can hum a little ditty for you called “bytches aint shyt” …I believe that Beyonce is ALSO responding to some of the pervasive and misogonystic music that has made many of our men rather two faced. They want a Michelle and a hoodie hood rat…you can’t really have both unless you gonna move them to UTAH…

“Why did it take a Beyonce album to click?”

Thats the thing I didn’t, but sometimes our voices (meaning black woman) don’t usually get heard over all the hoopla that goes on in the media, and in our every day lives, I mean we are already deemed to be abw so its kinda hard to go out there screaming put a ring on it without looking slightly retarded.

Beyonce has a voice big enough to make an impact which is only a REMINDER of how strong we are, truthfully we sometimes lose sight in all that being to caught up in the hype. its like that ah ha moment “oh yea, that ninja DOES need to put a ring on it”

I don’t say that to have an ego, but I say it to let yall know when you got something good, you can walk away from it easy and we would be fine, but 9 times outta 10 its not in your best interest lol.

@ Mik this IS golden rhat here. And SBM’s female posters touched on this slightly. I don’t see it as an ultimatum. She’s not strong armin dude, but the message to us ladies stop pinin’ away for that which DOESN’T WANT YOU. In my opinion action is more golden that words. So if i mean that much…show me.

and that really is the bottom line. And if a woman isn’t getting what she deserves keep it moving. Pixie dust only worked for Tinkerbell…not ya boyfriend.

I have to cosign what No More said. He took the words right out of my mouth.

    @Comeback
“Let me see if I can hum a little ditty for you called “bytches aint shyt” ”

This is not a good example. If you listen to the lyrics you will see the song is titled that in reference to them getting betrayed by women.

“They want a Michelle and a hoodie hood rat”

I agree. But these dudes are usually the insecure chauvinist. Women have the same problem. They want Obama/50 cent. You can’t have both.

The problem I have with the Beyonce songs i.e. (to the left, put a ring on it) and your above statement is that the women that yell and cosign it the hardest are the last ones that should be saying it. These women are not something good or have their ish together.

@ No “If a woman was fool enough to really think she wasnt shyt after hearing “b!tches aint shyt” then she was lost from jump. ”

Lets be honest about this conversation tho…there are very few hip songs by men that pertain to “loving a woman”..and im not one of those anti-hip hop chicks..all this music has a place on the turntable of life..it just needs a little more balance.

but no i realize that Im not NOT shyt and that I’m also not a ho@ or a tryck @zz bytch…but i don’t care what anybody says, listening ALOT to this music does affect even the best man with the most sincere intentions-particularly when his musical taste is not diversified.

  16. thecomebackgirl
    November 19, 2008 | 7:57 am

and lets keep it even mo realer…music is a social construct. in a way that it lets me know whats going on in the world..in a way that CNN NEVER WILL.

so either we have some very disingenious male hip hop artist fakin the metaphoric relationship and female view funk…or I have a warped view of myself as it pertains to this music.

Im betin on the former. Of course i wake up in the morning feelin good about myself. I mean i dont look to ANYBODY really to define who I am. But what about young women who never had the conversatioins with their mama’s/grandma’s or grandaddys/aunties and uncles/teachers about forming healthy self-views and concepts.

little girls (and boys) are looking to music for some of those answers.

I agree hip-hop needs more of a balance but there is alot of good positive hip hop, but you have to turn off the radio and tv and find it off of pandora, itunes and the like. It doesnt get mainstream attention, because the industry knows what sells, and right now its rarely a positive message. So the question I have is why did that happen? Why would todays youth rather listen to negative than positive?

    Good Morning guys,

I think the new feminism bothers men so much because some women are using it as a reason for their b****chiness or an “I don’t need you” attitude.

I don’t think it’s anything new…. both Lil Kim and Foxy (as skanky as they were), had women trying to “treat him like a prosititute.”

I do think some women have it all wrong. The main focus of feminism should not be men. The main focus should be you being proud of YOURSELF, knowing your worth, and attaining your own goals, not making him “put a ring on it. If he wants you, you shouldn’t have to say it or threaten him… Take the classy approach and just walk away.

are you saying “put a ring on it” was a threatening song?? I need some clerification

btw, comeback I listened to ego, once more and I am not feeling the message in it. Like Nicki said it shouldn’t have to be screamed to the mountain top that you are the ish, it should show in your every day life, you don’t have to tell a man your independent just be it and if he is a real man he should be doing what he is suppose to and if not welp, to the left to the left lol

Heroes, man if yall don’t think music is a big influence yall foolin, especially for young teens. Its obvious a lot of them/us don’t have mom’s n pops showing us or telling us that its just music and the reason is because more and more TEENS are becoming parents. I mean if your 20 year old mom is bumping she got a donkey every time you get in the car, what is the 5 year old gonna do??? Mom knows nothing better cuz she young, so I do blame hip hop to a certain point!!

Why is a 20 yr old mom playing that song in the presence of her 5 yr old? Again, personal responsibility.

I know you cant control every thing your child sees and hear. But you can communicate to them the proper ways to deal with it, whats important and whats not, whats true and whats false.

How is it fair to the artist that they have to censor their own work because somebody’s parent didn’t do their job?

Heroes my point was that she is young, and I am 100% sure she might know about taking personal responsibility heck who doesn’t. People are influenced by what they see and hear, come on nah…..

granted a lot of folks are an exception when they can make it from the hood to the whitehouse but, it takes a strong mind for that, and not every bodies got it.

Empowerment songs are fine–not saying they are not…I love music…listen to all genres and believe there’s a song to fit every situation. However, music … just like watching Oprah…reading self help books aren’t going to do a thing until the woman decides she’s worthy to be treated with respect; that she’s worthy to pursue her dreams; that she’s worthy for a little me time and that it’s okay not to be “superwoman.” Nobody (meaning husbands/kids) have to be neglected in the process. You treat folks how to treat you and that goes from strangers to the man you sleep with every night—and definitely goes for your kids.

What’s probably lacking in a lot of young ladies lives are role models. See for me I’ve always had good role models in my life growing up as well as since being an adult. There are examples all around me of women who are married/with kids and careers and/or business owners.

Yes, some things have to be juggled or put on hold. There’s a time for everything. These women aren’t superwomen, they just do what they have to do when they have to do it. It’s still I think natural for women and more specifically Black women to be able to adapt that way—whether married or single.

    So true.

Because I get free cds in all genres to do reviews I listen to everything and some of the CDs I wouldn’t buy if they were free :) It’s a man’s world when it comes to music and unfortunately women are not shown too favorably with all the “b’s” and “h’s” words flying around.

My nieces and nephews are surprised I know the lyrics to all the songs they listen to–so when I catch them singing something un appropriate or humming one—I check them on it. My nieces and nephews aren’t allowed to listen to certain songs around me. I can’t help what they listen to when they’re with their parents. What was hot last year was the song by Souljah Boy….some of the lyrics on the unedited version that sometimes played on the radio…”superman that ho”…I had to lecture them on what a ho was or was not.

Music is definitely not empowering when all the radio plays are songs that disrespect women. We have to teach young ladies to stop disrespecting themselves though too.

@superhussy – Hi and so true. I know too many women who have the family and career. They’lll be times where you have to compromise, but overall–with the right mate, you can have it all if that’s your desire.

“don’t use it to belittle men. It’s like you can’t build your self-esteem by tearing down others”

    True.

@ Shelia..im sorry, no one in a household SHOULD be intentially neglected…but i cannot buy the notion that women can have it all at the same time. Something suffers..its up to women to decide what stays and what goes (MOMENTARILY). And as a woman i wanna stack paper now…so that i don’t have to make those harder decisions birthin my dear crumb crushers.

@Comeback–I’m not saying that things won’t change. It goes back to having a good support base. You don’t have to neglect, you just have to re-organize your life. I’m telling you it’s been done…there are plenty of successful women who are not single.

Of course since you are single, you should be working towards your goals because yes, there will be an adjustment period when you get married and when you have kids. It’s even an adjustment when you’re just dating someone.

But Comeback you can have it all–marriage and kids are only as limiting as the person allows it to be. If I didn’t see it in action, I wouldn’t speak on it.

TI has a personal responsibility to his kids and his fam. Thats it. He is NOT responsible for your kids running around singing his songs without knowing the message of the song. If what you say is true then people shouldnt make movies that have negative messages cuz some idiot is going to emulate it, video game should be abolished cuz someone is gonna steal cars and shoot people, and God forbid you actually say something negative in the earshot of a child because that child will repeat you and believe you and its YOUR fault. Whatever

No More Heroes – I don’t see why Lil’ Wayne is so hot…the guys and the girls listen to him and swear he’s the best thing since Michael Jackson.

Parents should take active roles when it comes to the stuff their kids listen to—they will still listen because hey they are kids…but at least conversations are going on. As far as the radio, you know its still a payola system going on, although they will deny it. Folks should complain to the FCC…if they get enough complaints, they might stop playing it…but it takes more than one person complaining.

I will be on and off the blog today….

I had a layover in St. Louis and called my mama at work and sounded bad… she was slurring and breathless… couldn’t tell me the name of anyone around her so I could call… she said she had a bad headache. I went into panic mode…. she told me to have my brothers come pick her up (I wanted to call an ambulance)… my brother panicked, he can’t handle pressure. I was screaming at him on the phone. Told him I needed him to the be oldest child for one G-damn minute b/c I was miles away. It is tiring having to take care of everything. I wanted to choke him with bare hands. Anywho, mama ended up at hospital. I drove home from the Indi aiport, dropped my friends off at home, and rushed to the hospital where we stayed until 7 am… We were in a room but those damn cots are so uncomfortable. they discharged her with a “headache.” Are you F-in kidding me???? They did two CT Scans. She’s still in pain.

I’m getting sick… overslept for work and my boss told me to stay home today and take care of stuff.
Thankfully, my granny will take her to the doctor today.

Sorry for the story folks…. just letting you know why I’m “off” today.

    If you don’t know, I’m a mama’s girl to the 10,000th power.

Heroes the radio station puts out what they are given to put out for what ever amounts of money. Just like the artist who sing the songs they have a choice but the responsibility lies on the artist, you gonna sell your woman out, your moms, teachers, social works for a dollar ??

T.I got “live your life” which is basically mainstream because I am acknowledging your list but thats not whats being played on the radio. But the song is seemingly positive so much that I sing it, so don’t tell me if you start switching it up that it wont have an affect on the youngins and eventually change the game, old school hip hop used to be positive and have a positive affect on people why is it different now??

Comeback: “Lets be honest about this conversation tho…there are very few hip songs by men that pertain to “loving a woman”..and im not one of those anti-hip hop chicks..all this music has a place on the turntable of life..it just needs a little more balance.”

No More: “Why would todays youth rather listen to negative than positive?”

The hip-hop business is just that, a business. If you own a record company, and you notice your 50 Cent-like artist are going triple platinum, and your Mos Def-like artist doesn’t even go rubber, who are you going to back as an artist? Until the hip-hop consumers start demanding more positive music with their dollars, we’re going to continue to get Soldier Boy, Laffy Taffy, and Vibe magazines saying Plies (Plies!) is the future of hip-hop music.

Mik, why is it so hard to not listen to the radio? Buy the CD’s off the positive artists you like and listen away. If you know the radio is on some BS then dont even bother, or complain to them that changes should be made.

Why is society on stupid mode now? Negative messages in art and entertainment have been around since the beginning. Yet it was viewed as it was, entertainment, and not taken seriously. Now all of a sudden kids are impressionable and parents suck so much that we have to ask random rappin-@ss-ni&&a to help us raise our kids, talk nice to them and get them to respect women.

And that there is the problem–people complain to each other but don’t share those complaints with the officials they elect–starting at the ground floor–the alderman/councilman/representative/senator.

Mikki, I wish I knew the answer. I’ve been there from the beginning of hip-hop and to see it evolve into what it is now is frightening. But as long as the powers that be make money–they don’t care about upholding any kind of standards.

The consumer actually has more power than they think they do. Consumers actions speaks louder than any words—and unfortunately their actions are keeping the same music we might complain about on air and in the stores.

It seems like we all agree that something needs to be done—but until consumers start putting their dollars behind better music then it’ll remain status quo. We have the same discussion in the book world because folks complain about sex and violence in books, but the publishers only look at the bottom line—the books with sex and violence are selling so they keep buying those type of books.

I have to high-five Comeback–”Im going to make THEM.” I write books but they are NOT filled with sex and violence. They sell, maybe not as well as the sex and violence ones, but I’m still able to make money and do what I love–writing books, without conforming to writing “sex and violence.”

Mainstream media is there to give people an excuse to avoid the hard questions. The hard questions that will ultimately solve the problem, but will involve lots of effort. And mainstream media says putting in effort isn’t sexy. See the cycle?

I read you point Jolie McFoly..sorry.

“I strive to be the best JOLIE I can be … not to be like B or Michelle .. I might admire some of the qualities . .take a good look at myself and modify.. or rather snap back and take a look if I have lost myself .. but thats about it.. ”

and I co-sign it..you gotta be you. But nothing wrong with like you said loving great qualities in other women. i think i heart B more than most, because she is often ripped to shreads by other women. I usually get behind women (the yaya in me) more ..when i see women broken down for no apparent reason at all…but just to make somebody really mediocre feel better about themselves.

@Jolie – “I strive to be the best JOLIE I can be”
Exactly. Don’t imitate but if you feel that you can do better in a certain area, then by all means work on improving. We don’t need clones because that’s where the issue comes in on this topic–we’re all unique and trying to be like the “Beyonces or the Jones” might not get you the same result as trying to be you but better.

Not really. We would buy the rock because we want Esther. We would be fully aware of that. We just wouldnt care. If they had a stand-alone picture of her naked then the rock would still be on the shelf.

I’m just going have to look her up once I get home……So I’m just trying to visualize these measurements… .So she’s heavy up top, slender waist and huge @zz?????? Sounds to me like she would have trouble finding clothes that fit… Lol

yep…like for example im watchin the roots “you got me”…i also am like a lyric nut now.

i was reluctant to buy Bey’s stuff on itunes..cause I like to read the cd jackets..the words are more important to me than say when I was 22.

Sorry Hum…80’s she a video chic…minus the stripper part like Lola Luv…I’m mad Hum even knew to reference Lola instead but that’s another reply all in itself.

Yall chics are small…I’m a 36DD, 29, 42…yeah I have hips for days…I don’t really mind staying my measurements really b/c I like how my curves…just want them to be solid with no jiggle…so my goal is to tone, not necessarily slim down…they like em thick in the South.

80’s the middle measurement isn’t necessarily your pants size, it’s your waist size…which is normally a little slimmer than your pants size for those of us who have curves.

Thats crazy. I’ve always been into lyrics. I just don’t understand how you can listen to music and ignore the lyrics. Especially hip-hop. If you listen that way you are only getting 1/2 of the music. Its like the MC is there just for decoration on the beat.

i think she was just being realistic about the sitcheeation.

she’s the one that had to be there thru all his rehabbin’ and she’s gonna be the one taking care of home when he’s gone and where he could possibly injure himself again. she’s said how she hates how they treat them (the players) like dogs. that n!gga shit was f^cked up! and i think she doesn’t want to see that happen again.

  239. thecomebackgirl
    November 19, 2008 | 3:19 pm

“i think she was just being realistic about the sitcheeation.”

her realism cost him that shot…i believe that..i could hear it in her voice that she was not happy about his move..AND HE HEARD IT TOO. which is why he was like “you don’t seem happy for me”.

if she didn’t want him to be so far..then maybe she should have prayed for a closer gig. Pray dat..but don’t get mad when what he wants comes through.

they got enough money between her signin with a MAJOR jeweler, his stuff, real estate etc…where she aint gotta be so “realistic”. Hire a house manager and root yo man on.

  241. AnitraClark
    November 19, 2008 | 3:22 pm

I agree cuzzo, I know she was feeling some kinda way. I feel both sides

on his side, yes football is his passion and it would matter depending on how long he played n such, maybe he wants super bowl, maybe he wants one more season who knows but it needs to be talked about.

On her side I would support him even still, I would let my support shine through so tough that he would be like you know what, this aint even worth it im staying home with my wife n kids.

He doesn’t strike me as a selfish man. but when men are after something they keep going til they get it. and she is rich aint like she doing a whole lotta nothings lol ackin (yea i said ackin) like she really do so much…..

ususally…somebody that does something well is relatively successful at it. This isnt a hobby ed picked up on the way to get ice cream yesterday…football is in the man’s blood.

Deshawn constantly encourages and inspires her man…when Eric’s face lit up talkin about sports commentation (is that a word) or coaching ..she was fully on board with both.

Ed conceded AT THE END. it don’t 30 more mins for me to know that Lisa was NOT ON BOARD and she spoke a little death to his dream. If your gonna that to a man..you betta have mad other suggestions at other things he is passionate about and could tear tha club up wit.

i dunno they are newly weds…but i think some of her behavior was a little selfish..if he’s your soulmate you got all life with the man. Are they hurtin for money for two houses. or an “away home”..

Might I add it seems quite a few of the ladies up here seem to have been MIA when real rap in the 90s was being made…so what did yall do listen to “Hot” or “Power” whatever then hit the club and see what your little cousins and siblings listen to and thats how yall determine whats out there?

Some of the brothers up here like me dont listen to music that way…we been manipulating this shit since TDK tapes with the tissue in the rec tab!!!

We would sit there in 88 and fast foward the BS to get to Kane and KRS ONE..the Web and MP3 players only made that easier for us. This is what Hugh Jazz meant when he say “pay for quality”

First we listen..get a dub from our boy or download it-its banging you get my dough…wack it goes back..and f-the radios opinion on the song they got profit motives and shareholders to appease.

And we listen to get to lyrics like this:

“if Jesus was a kind man then he should understand times in this crime land” real hip hop heads know whose line this is!!!

See we, the guys do DISCERN the lyrics. But the ladies get in their rides and turn on the wack radio station AGAIN that plays songs she HATES…listen I am New Yorker…phuck Hot 97.1!!!!

I havent listened to that station since 94 yet when The Roots dropped Rising Down this spring I had it the DAY before it came out and not a lyric of that album was promoted on the air (my friends that do listen to the radio never knew the LP was out).

So why are these songs so “new” to some of you women?

Where were yall at music wise when dead prez dropped their first LP?

How bout in 94 when Commom dropped “I Used to Love Her” and how about when The Roots had the “Never DoWhat They Do” the video is a classic (and so is that LP).

@ any of the women that want “postive” hip hop

Cant believe no one brought up Outkast discography their growth as artist cannot be underrated and judging from the lingo and slang most of yall are not Up North East Coasters. So in 94 the Southern/Midwestern women werent checking for “Southernplayalisticcadiallamusik” please tell me yall knew of Dre and Big Boi BEFORE “Ms Jackson” or “Hey Ya”

I am a Brooklynite and I got that album (and everything else Outkast made since) and video the month it came out (okay the CD has been replaced several times but the video is still in my closet on VHS baby) and also “Goodie Mob’s” first LP was tight, mad postive..and De La’ last studio LP “Grind Date” is BANGING…massively slept on LP.

So in 94 the Southern/Midwestern women werent checking for “Southernplayalisticcadiallamusik”

@ temp…..Sorry but ummm in 94 I wasn’t checking for Southernplayalisticcadiallamusik mainly because I was 11 or 12 depending on the time of year this was. released……. So how could I relate to this cd or any other cd from the early 90’s that you’re referring to if I wasn’t dealing with any of these issues at the time?

@80’s Baby, I am 32, I was 12 when My Philosophy was out, It Takes Two (Rob Base and Easy E still gets spins in parties today) I was ten.

Again I was alone no older siblings and this was 86

…same could be said for Newcleus’ song “Jam On it”(no further than 85) I could not have been no older than 8 or 9 but that song is a staple in my iPod, same could be said for Eric B and Rakim’s Paid in Full

I dont know about some yall up here but most of my hip hop was constructed BEFORE my adolesence.

I didnt use being a teen that was “rebelling” as a reason to get into rap (which meant you only liked songs that pissed off mom and dad not because these songs were actually good).

Again 80’s baby I was a 70’s baby and yea I do know songs, TV shows (where do you think the term “5-0″ for the cops came from? The TV show Hawaii ” booke Danno” 5-0, 5-0 was for the 50th state, that was a 70’s show no doubt about it) and movies from that era (Star Wars the first original trilogy was all done by 83) but do you remember the orginal “Knight Rider” with David Hasselhoff?

    Probably not.

Heck what of the decade you were born in do you know about?

The one thing we didnt do with the 70’s was bring the ugly ass faishon back (hint to 80s kids that 80s gear is played out and so is the high top fade..let it go!!!)

I think todays crowd is lazy (from industry to industry-drug dealing to Ivy League students, young and old) and expects change even if they have done nothing to promote it..so progressive rap will just “be on the air” cuz women are tired of being disrespected in the lyrics”…whatever.

I just cant see me saying “yea well I was only 11 when “Aint No Half Steppin” came out so I cant realate.

@ Temps….. I was just responding to your statement “So in 94 the Southern/Midwestern women werent checking for “Southernplayalisticcadiallamusik” in regards to me and why I wasn’t checkin for it in 94. I’m sorry but in the early 90’s pretty much the only music I listened to was the music that was on the radio while I was on my way to soccer practice, basketball practice, and all the other extracurricular activities that my parents had me in when I was a kid. So again as a 12 year old in 94 no I was not checking for Southernplayalisticcadiallamusik because I was an involved kid outside of the house and when I was inside the house I was probably reading a book because that was one of my interests at the time…

So you’ve mentioned the songs Jam On it and It Takes Two that were out during your adolescence. So were you listening to Jam On It when you were 8 or 9 or did you start listening to this once you got older?

I think you women just need to shut the fu*k up. Stop working and give your job up to the men. An unemployed man is like rape to a woman. Give up your jobs, let the men work, go home and shut the f&ck up. Then things will be better. As long as women continue to work, things will continue to be bad BECAUSE MEN DON’T WANT YOU TO WORK IN CORPORATIONS. SO FU*KING STOP IT. We want you at home. Corporate jobs were made for men. You don’t belong there. Go home. Raise the kids. Cook the meals and shut the fu*k up. Thanks.
